Debt Advisory Centre (DAC)

The Debt Advisory Centre (DAC) is a one-stop centre that provides advice and education to individuals who face debt problems. The formation of a debt advisory centre was one of the strategies proposed during the 3rd National Convention of Singapore Muslim Professionals, organised by the Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) on 30 June 2012, to strengthen the community’s financial architecture.

DAC was launched on 1 April 2013. In its pilot year, DAC focused on assisting clients referred by partner agencies and organisations. Its long-term plan is to extend its services to the general Singapore community.

Since its formation in 2013, DAC has assisted over 2,600 clients in debt, serving about 300 clients yearly.

Range of Services

Advice

The DAC provides a tailored roadmap for debtors, outlining in-house and external solutions based on their circumstances. It also offers a support group for those in debt to legal or illegal moneylenders, fostering shared experiences and emotional support. Where needed, clients or their families may be referred to AMP’s Adopt a Family and Youth Scheme (AFYS) or other agencies to address basic needs while debt issues are resolved.

Educate

The DAC conducts workshops on topics like debt management, borrower and lender rights, and bankruptcy to educate clients and the public. These workshops aim to prevent new debts, enhance financial literacy, and promote better financial decisions. Additionally, social workers and counselors receive training to better understand and assess clients' debt situations.

Research

The DAC will also be the platform to collect quality data to research and draw inference on the extent of the debt problem within the community.
